Short description

The aims of this project, in short, is to evaluate if a nurse-led urinary catheter protocol can reduce postoperative bladder extension, catheter related urinary tract infections and duration of indwelling urinary catheter, in elderly patients with hip fracture. The secondary aim is to investigate if it is feasible to introduce such a protocol and if it is cost effective.

Design

this is a mixed method study that will explore both the implementation process quantitatively and qualitatively. Preliminary results from the Safe Hand has informed the development of the implementation program. Data from local quality registers will be used for analyze patient  related outcomes.

Expected value and clinical relevance

This project has the potential to add new knowledge regarding the implementation of preventive innovation in emergency room, intensive care units and geriatric wards. If the sterile insertion method and the nurse led protocol is proven safe and effective these methods can be  tested and implemented elsewhere and thus improve the safety of elderly patient  undergoing hip fracture surgery.
