Abstract:

In this paper, Ian Cawood will attempt to summarise the recent historiography of the struggle for better standards in public life in the wider European context. This will include consideration of the conclusions from work on Denmark and Sweden as well as the work on France, Germany and Great Britain. Some initial attempts have been made to examine how campaigners and reformers took inspiration from other regions and/or countries in their attempts to expose and eradicate corruption, but these have yet to produce an effective transnational study. The paper will offer some examples of how this approach can inform our understanding of the British solution to the issue and then suggest which areas of analysis can be developed with such a methodology in future.
