About Ylva Bjereld

Background

I am an associate professor in social work. My research career began as a research assistant and later as a doctoral student in public health science at the former Nordic School of Public Health. In 2017, I defended my doctoral thesis in social work, If they only knew: Bullying victimization among children and youth in the Nordic countries. Since then, I have continued to focus on bullying and related areas of research.

National and international collaborations are important aspects of my work. I have an ongoing collaboration with the School Bullying Research Group at the Department of Behavioural Sciences and Learning at Linköping University, where I previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher. Since 2016, I have been a member of the Swedish national team of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study, a WHO collaborative cross-national study of adolescent health and well-being.

Research

My research is primarily focused on unsafe places in schools and bullying among children. Much of my research is based on children’s and young people’s own experiences, examining how their schooling, leisure time, mental health, and social relationships are affected by insecurity at school and bullying. One area I often highlight is covert bullying, that is, bullying that children and young people are subjected to but that adults are unaware of. Describing and understanding the processes involved when children and young people who are subjected to bullying either tell an adult about it or instead try to manage the situation without adult involvement is a defining feature of my research focus.
