About Tom Karlsson

Tom S. Karlsson has a background as a PhD in business administration (accounting and management accounting) and is an associate professor in public administration. His research has largely touched on management trends and leadership in central government, as well as how accounting and management accounting and control affect organizations and individuals. The concept new public management (NPM) has been in special focus, where he has published both books and scientific articles in international journals such as Public Management Review and Financial Accountability & Management.

Current research projects include:

  • The view of efficiency in public and private entities and organizations
  • The construction of citizens as customers
  • Digitalization of processes and decision support in public organizations
  • The significance of calculations and cost accounting within municipal and government decision-making

He has a broad teaching background, especially in the areas of accounting, financial management and calculation, where both graduate economists and administrative economists have been his students. He has extensive experience in developing courses in the areas of business administration and public administration and supervises and examines essays at the bachelor's and master's level.

Since 2019, he has been director of studies and program coordinator for the Nordic master's program Nordic Master in Pubic Administration, Leadership, and Digitalization.
