About Anna Backman Rogers

I graduated from the University of Edinburgh, UK in 2011 with a PhD in Film Studies. From 2010 to 2012 I held the position of Assistant Professor in Film at the University of Groningen, Netherlands. From 2012 to 2014 I was a postdoctoral fellow in Film Studies at Stockholm University, Sweden. From 2014 onwards, I hold the position of Senior Lecturer in Feminism and Visual Culture at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

I am the author of American Independent Cinema: Rites of Passage and The Crisis Image (Edinburgh University Press, 2015) and Sofia Coppola: The Politics of Visual Pleasure (Berghahn 2018)

I am the co-editor with Laura Mulvey of Feminisms (Amsterdam University Press, 2015) and the co-editor with Boel Ulfsdotter of Female Authorship and the Documentary Image: Theory, Practice and Aesthetics and Female Agency and Documentary Strategies: Subjectivities, Identity, and Activism (both with Edinburgh University Press, 2017)

I am the co-founder and editor in chief, with Anna Misiak, of the online academic feminist journal MAI: FEMINISM AND VISUAL CULTURE

I am currently preparing a monograph on Lynne Ramsay, Simone de Beauvoir, ethics, ambiguity and cinema (Berghahn 2021), am editing (with Laura Nicholson) a special issue on the figure of the female detective in television drama (MAI 2020) and am preparing a short monograph on Barbara Loden's film, WANDA (under review).

I was the conference director for Film-Philosophy, 2018 at the University of Gothenburg, which placed special emphasis on gender and feminist issues.

I am an outspoken, engaged feminist who has frequently commented in a public capacity on feminist politics in relation to visual culture at large (for Swedish television SVT; the British Film Institute; The Daily Telegraph; Nordic Women in Film; Svenska Bio; Svenska Dagbladet; Swedish Elle; FOKUS; Femina; The Gentlewoman). I am available for comment and critique within popular outlets and forums. I refuse, however, to engage with groups centring on Men's Rights Activism or Trans exclusion. I take online bullying and abuse of feminist and LGBTQI discourse very seriously indeed and report any instance of aggressively mannered correspondence or interaction I receive. I advise you strongly to refrain from contacting me if your purpose is to try to engage in this kind of tedious form of correspondence.

I am currently supervising a PhD on Latin American feminist horror cinema and have examined a PhD in relation to feminism and comic books and graphic novels. I am also available for supervision and examination within a feminist capacity.

I specialise in Feminist philosophy, Film-Philosophy, Popular Cultures and Gender, and Female Authorship.

I hold both British and Swedish nationality and speak English, Swedish and French (after a fashion).
