The Structure of the Somali language

Course
SOL130
Bachelor’s level
7.5 credits (ECTS)

Summary

During this course the students develop an advanced understanding of the Somali language as a linguistic system.

About

The main focus of this course is on the study and analysis of phonetics, morphology, syntax and vocabulary. Different Somali language descriptions are compared, and the advantages and disadvantages of the different descriptions are discussed. At the centre of this course are descriptions formulated in Somali where the language is seen from a native language perspective, but also descriptions in other languages may be brought up for the purpose of comparison. The course aims at a contrastive perspective of the structure of Somali. Through the reading of course literature in Somali, students acquire a broader linguistic conceptual apparatus in Somali. Through discussions in Swedish, the Swedish conceptual apparatus is also strengthened and increased.
