Global Gender Studies

Global Gender Studies explore the complexities of current assumptions about gender, gender affiliation and sexuality. Focus is on global perspectives and the effects of increasing globalisation, migration and mobility for people around the globe.

About

The courses in global gender studies discuss the concepts of feminine and masculine: what do these concepts do, are they necessary, and for what purpose? Should they continue to be one of society’s fundamental organizing principles? What does this look like in other parts of the world? How have gender and sexuality been understood in other historical periods, and how do these traditional perspectives shape present-day conditions?

Through global and historical perspectives, we examine what is actually nature and what is culture when it comes to gender and sexuality. What can we learn from these other ways of organizing gender when reflecting on current power relations and how they need to change?

Our courses focus in particular on global perspectives and how increasing globalization, migration, and mobility affect women and men, as well as those who do not fit within prevailing normative identities. Using feminist, postcolonial, and intersectional theories and methods, we explore gender-related issues in relation to local and global power relations and processes of change. The courses provide space to discuss and examine how we can transform power relations concerning gender, sexuality, and identity in a globalized world.
