Pilot with fast tracks for newcomers with research education

Published

The University of Gothenburg has initiated a project for newcomers with a refugee background, aiming at shortening the path to either complete a PhD-education or to a career within higher education. The project has been granted one million Swedish kronor by The Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT).

The Swedish government has formulated a number of tasks for higher education in order to facilitate access to the labor market through education. The professions of university teachers and researchers has as of yet not been included in those initiatives. Therefore the University of Gothenburg initiated an application for funds to be able to try new ways of working with this issue.

Karolina Catoni“The project aims at shortening the path to either complete the PhD-education or to a career within higher education. By providing the participants with the right tools and conditions Swedish universities can benefit from the high competence possessed by the participants says Karolina Catoni,” coordinator of the project at the University of Gothenburg.

The project is formed as a fast-track and targets refugees who have not been in Sweden for more than five years, currently living in Sweden and have completed or started PhD-education from outside of Sweden.

After completing the program, participants shall have a clear picture of how they can proceed within the Swedish academia. All five universities in Västra Götaland are part of the application. Associated partners include among others Region Västra Götaland and Länsstyrelsen Västra Götaland.

The program consists of three different parts that will run parallel during the project period:

  • Training; for example language courses, research funding, publications and open access, academic writing, pedagogical development and training
  • Personal and professional development including career guidance
  • Academic mentoring program

The project will run until 2019.
