Great interest in our first international summer school

Published

Summer School for Sustainability brings together students from around the world to delve into issues related to Agenda 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. More than 800 students applied for the 182 available spots.

On July 5 the University of Gothenburg’s first international summer school, Summer School for Sustainability, kicks off. Students in Sweden and at the University’s partner institutions abroad study together for four weeks.

“I’m glad to see such great interest. An international summer school has been requested by our partner universities to give more students the opportunity to study at the University of Gothenburg. The premiere was supposed to be last year, but due to the pandemic, it was postponed for a year. This year the summer school will be conducted completely digitally, says Annika Larsson, project manager for Summer School for Sustainability.

Sustainability theme

Focus for the summer school is Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals. Five faculties at the university gives in total six courses on the theme, and all teaching is in English.

The sustainability theme came naturally, says Eva Wiberg, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gothenburg.

“The University of Gothenburg has a far-reaching work with sustainability in teaching and research, and has sustainability as a focus area in the Vision 2021-2030. We have been ranked high in the Times Higher Education rankings three years in a row when it comes to the universities' work to achieve the global goals. This will be an opportunity for the University of Gothenburg to promote education and research”, she says.

Students from all over the world

Students from 25 countries study together. 136 exchange students and 46 students in the national admission round, of the more than eight hundred first-hand applicants, have been admitted.

Each student gets accepted to one of the six courses during the whole period, and also has the opportunity to participate in an extensive program of activities that are open to all summer schools students. These activities include joint workshops and lectures on issues varying from urban gardening, sustainable waste management and aquaponics, to a meeting with the filmmaker Dr Chadden Hunter who worked with Sir David Attenborough for 20 years.

“The students will have the opportunity to interact across course boundaries, to create new exciting meetings and insights. I hope that July will be the best month of the year for everyone involved – students, course leaders, lecturers and student ambassadors”, says Annika Larsson.
