About Mattias Gunnarsson

Mattias is a senior lecturer in design at HDK-Valand-Academy of Art and Design. He lectures, supervises, holds courses and workshops in design at both BA and MA levels. He has a background in spatial design, with an interest in the city and public space. The urban environment with its many layers of information and stories is often part of his courses, lectures, workshops and artistic practice.

Mattias has an artistic practice with a focus on visual work and artistic publishing. He also collaborates with Susanne Westerberg in the artistic platform MASU which focuses on spatial installation work and drawing.

Mattias has a great interest in, and works with, zines, self-publishing, publishing as an artistic practice and issues related to independent publishing, distribution, no-ISBN etc. He continuously publishes zines and art publications that he exchanges in an international network.

Mattias is the program director for MFA Design and will primarily work with the MA design programs and the independent course EAT - Food Culture, Materiality and Design during the 2025-2026 academic year. He will also run artistic projects with MASU and continue to develop the HDK Zine Library.
