About Bettina Schulz Paulsson

Dr. Bettina Schulz Paulsson, Marie Curie research fellow

My main research is on the Neolithic and I am in particular interested in scientific dating, megaliths, rock art studies and archaeological theory.

I obtained my MA in Prehistoric Archaeology/American Anthropology in 2005 at the Humboldt /Freie Universität in Berlin/Germany and my PhD in 2013 at the graduate school “Human development in Landscapes”/Christian-Albrechts Universität Kiel. My PhD-thesis Time and Stone: the emergence of megaliths and megalithic societies was concerned with the dating of megaliths in Europe and is based on 2 400 available radiocarbon results from pre-megalithic, megalithic and to the megaliths contemporaneous contexts and the application of a Bayesian statistical framework.

As a Bayesian Modeling & Data Analysis Statistical consultant, I am involved in several national and international projects within contract archaeology and international research projects as e.g. the French-Spanish-Portuguese collaboration Variscite in Neolithic Europe and the PCR project "Nécropoles Préhistoriques et Protohistoriques de Passy (Yonne).

Recently, I have been appointed to the Department of History as a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Research Fellow, funded under the EC’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Initiative. My project “Symbol and Stone” is a comparative study of the megalithic art in Europe in order to analyze and explain how inter-cultural exchange between prehistoric societies (4500-2500 cal BC) shaped megalithic art, and to theorize and interpret the significance and function of these images.
