Johan Lybeck 1944-2017

Johan Lybeck (1944-2017) passed away on the 22nd of September.

In 1978 he succeeded Harald Dickson as Professor of Economics at our department.

He was a graduate from Stockholm School of Economics (1966) and got his PhD at the University of Michigan in 1971. His main interest was financial markets, and besides articles he wrote about ten books within this field. Several books were about financial crises and some were about the currency question in the EU.

Johan had broad interests and took also a licentiate’s degree in political science in 1986. He also worked practically in the financial sector at Sparbankernas bank, Finanskonsult and Matteus Bank, at the same time as he held his chair at our department. This was not a successful combination, and in 1993 he left his professorship.

In 2003 he moved to France where he managed his two castles, besides writing. Now he also returned to his early interest in history and published the comprehensive book Eleonore av Akvitanien (2006) on a strong 12th century French queen.

Johan was a versatile and verbally gifted scholar. He caught the interest of the audience masterly when he gave a seminar or a lecture.
