About the Department of Molecular and Clinical Medicine
Here you can read more about the Department of Molecular and Clinical Medicine, our goals, and our collaborators.
The Department of Molecular and Clinical Medicine is one of four departments within the Institute of Medicine. More than 200 people work here, including both basic scientists and clinicians. Our facilities are located at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Östra Hospital, and Mölndal Hospital.
Our Research
We conduct translational research focusing on cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders, obesity, and diabetes. Our aim is to improve public health and healthcare services while creating an outstanding translational research environment of the highest international standard.
Our research is carried out within several specialised units, including acute and cardiovascular medicine, nephrology, and diabetes medicine. Within these units, research is conducted through various research groups.
Research areas:
Research is conducted at several research centres:
- Wallenberg Laboratory for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research
- Lundberg Laboratory for Diabetes Research
- Centre for Lifestyle Intervention
Our Goals
To improve human health by:
- Identifying disease mechanisms and developing methods to prevent, manage, and cure cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes.
To improve healthcare by:
- Working closely with healthcare providers to translate research findings into practical measures that lead to better patient care.
- Actively promoting collaboration between clinical and experimental research and encouraging the recruitment of medical professionals into research.
Education
Education is an important part of our activities. Many of our researchers teach future physicians, specialist nurses, and biomedical scientists. In addition, we contribute to independent courses, provide commissioned education, and supervise doctoral students.
Programmes in which we participate:
- Medical Programme (in Swedish)
- Specialist Nursing Programme (in Swedish)
- Biomedical Science Programme (in Swedish)
National and International Collaboration
Our department works closely with healthcare services, including both Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Östra Hospital. This collaboration ensures high-quality clinical education and research in cardiology, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, clinical physiology, internal medicine, and nephrology. It also provides excellent opportunities to implement research findings in clinical practice.
We maintain extensive international collaborations, as international cooperation is essential for the development of our research and teaching. Several of our researchers participate in EU-funded projects and collaborate closely with researchers at Chalmers University of Technology as well as with the pharmaceutical industry.
Work With Us
Are you a researcher looking to take the next step in your career? We offer outstanding research environments where you can develop professionally. Our activities range from preclinical laboratory research to clinical research and population-based studies.
We work closely with healthcare providers, maintain a broad international network, and are connected to the Core Facilities platform, which provides advanced technical infrastructure and expertise for researchers.
