About the Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition
Here you can read more about the Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition. We describe our goals, organisation and partners.
The Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition is one of four departments at the Institute of Medicine. It has just over 100 employees and around 140 affiliated members. Our premises are located at Medicinareberget, Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Mölndal Hospital.
Our research
We conduct broad research across several areas and specialisations. We use translational research that combines everything from preclinical laboratory research and animal studies to clinical research involving participants.
Our research spans clinical nutrition, endocrinology, allergy and pulmonary medicine. We conduct world-leading research on the intestinal disorder IBS and successful research on osteoporosis. We work closely with healthcare services and conduct everything from preclinical laboratory research and animal studies to clinical research involving participants.
Research areas:
- Asthma and allergic diseases
- Osteoporosis
- Diabetes and endocrinology
- Gastroenterology and hepatology
- Nutrition for health and during illness
Our research is conducted at several research centres:
- Krefting Research Centre
- COPD Centre – research group for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Sahlgrenska Osteoporosis Centre – research on osteoporosis
Our goals
Our overall aim is to understand disease mechanisms and develop specific diagnostic tools and treatments that facilitate more personalised treatment for patients with:
- osteoporosis
- endocrine disorders (hormonal disorders)
- haematological diseases (diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs)
- sleep disorders
- asthma
- COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
- IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)
A number of projects are also underway to evaluate the effects of nutrition and probiotics on these diseases.
Education – an important part of our work
Education is an important part of our activities. We are responsible for the Dietetics Programme and for several semesters of the Medical Programme. We also conduct extensive doctoral education, with the aim of training doctoral students to become independent, critically thinking researchers.
We offer supervision in: allergology, endocrinology, gastroenterology and liver diseases, haematology, pulmonary medicine, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, geriatrics and clinical nutrition.
Programmes in which we participate:
- Dietetics Programme (in Swedish)
- Medical Programme (in Swedish)
Collaboration with healthcare and the pharmaceutical industry
We work closely with healthcare services, which provides excellent opportunities to maintain high quality in both clinical education and research. Needs and questions that arise in healthcare therefore have a natural place in our research and help ensure that new treatments, methods and technologies reach healthcare services and patients more quickly. We also collaborate with the pharmaceutical industry and Region Västra Götaland.
