Meet our alumni

Our alumni have marine careers in fields ranging from marine technology development and numerical modelling to environmental monitoring and mussel farming. Here you can meet some of our alumni who have completed one - or more ! - of our marine programmes at the Department of Marine Sciences.

Svenja is an expert on aquaculture

Svenja Hess wrote a master’s thesis about oysters at the Master’s Programme in Sea and Society – that led her to a position as an aquaculture expert at IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute. At her workplace at the Kristineberg Marine Research Station, she quite literally has the ocean just around the corner and can combine report writing with fieldwork.

"The best part is getting out on the sea, for example when we take the boat out to our test farms in the Gullmar Fjord," says Svenja Hess.

Simon works as oceanographer at SMHI

Simon Pliscovaz first studied the Bachelor's programme in Marine Science with a specialisation in oceanography and then the Master's programme in Physical Oceanography. In his work at SMHI, he works with everything from weather warnings to modelling.

"I understand much more about the programme now when I get to use the knowledge I have gained," says Simon Pliscovaz.

Christian is a doctoral student

Christian Nilsson studied both the Bachelor’s programme and the Master’s programme in Marine Sciences. As a student he discovered a previously unknown deep-sea worm, and now he's conducting research into deep-sea worm forests as a doctoral student at the University of Bergen.

"These ecosystems have hardly been explored at all, and many species haven’t been described or even discovered," says Christian Nilsson.

Mekhala surveys the seafloor ecosystems

Marine scientist Mekhala Gangabadage from Sri Lanka realised that she needed a more interdisciplinary education. That's why she chose to study the Master's programme in Sea and Society . She now works as a remote survey operator at Ocean Infinity, looking at seafloor ecosystems.

"Many people told me that I should specialise in my master's, but instead I broadened my focus,’" says Mekhala Gangabadag

Sophia and Rikard are marine environmental specialists

Sophia Hallberg and Rikard Karlsson are marine environmental specialists working with offshore renewable energy at the Nordic wind energy company Zephyr. They both studied the Bachelor's programme in Marine Science.

"We work with everything from analysing sediment cores from the ocean floor to investigate the presence of contaminants, to inventorying the presence of porpoises in the area," says Sophia Hallberg.
