Barry Ryan will be defending his work on James Joyce, understood by literary scholars and Irish historians to be one of the great recorders of Irish childhood. However, no extended  studies exist that engage with childhood in Joyce. The aim of Barry's thesis is to explore the depiction of children and childhood in Joyce and to discuss the relevance of changes in Joyce's portrayal of children and childhood.
