Alisa Wüst new PhD with focus on nitrous oxide

The Department's new doctoral student Alisa Wüst is looking forward to immerse herself in the nitrous cycle in the ocean. In her spare time, she likes to devote herself to her new hobby of crocheting. And dreams of experiencing the northern lights.

What are you going to do here?

I will investigate the dynamics of the nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas, in the marine environment. Oxygen depleted zones are one of the main regions where nitrous oxide is emitted to the atmosphere. We want to understand and identify pathways of nitrous oxide and investigate environmental parameters that control its accumulation and/or production. Therefore, we will use 15N-tracer experiments to measure consumption and production rates of nitrous oxide.

What did you do before?

I am originally from Germany, and there I obtained my bachelor’s and master’s degree. In my bachelor’s I studied chemistry at the Freie University in Berlin. Afterwards, I moved to Oldenburg to follow my interest of investigating the ocean and studied marine environmental sciences. I also had the chance to do an Erasmus in Faro, Portugal. In my master thesis I focused on the carbon cycle and now am very excited to gain greater insight into the nitrogen cycle and work on nitrous oxide in the marine environment.

What do you like do when you are not working?

I enjoy being outside in the sun. I like going on hikes and longs walks or just sit close to the sea with an ice cream. Recently, I started a new hobby – crocheting. I am still learning the basics and hope to start some nice projects soon.

Something special you are looking forward to?

I am really excited to work together with many passionate and great people and experience Sweden much more. I would love to see the northern lights in northern Sweden.
