Greek – research

Historically, research in Greek at the University of Gothenburg has encompassed most core areas of philology and its related fields, including textual criticism, linguistics, and philosophy. Research has been conducted in Mycenaean as well as Classical and Medieval Greek. In recent decades, the primary research focus has been on Greek during the Roman Imperial and Byzantine periods.

Research Areas

Currently, research is conducted spanning the entire period from the Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic eras (Homer, Herodotus, Thucydides, Plato) to Late Antiquity and the Byzantine era (Marcus Aurelius, Libanius, Basil of Caesarea, Procopius, Metochites).

The following research areas are represented: textual criticism, historiography, rhetoric, epigraphy, the history of education, Hellenistic philosophy, diachronic linguistics, and translation.

The subject participates in the department’s research areas and their associated seminar activities. Greek collaborates closely with the other ancient languages at the department: Latin and Old Church Slavonic.

The subject seminar in Classical Languages brings together researchers, doctoral students, and advanced-level students from both Ancient Greek and Latin.
