Bachelor's Programme in English Studies
This programme is designed for those who want to earn a Bachelor's degree in English and pursue a future in an English-speaking or multilingual environment. You will study full-time over six semesters, with at least four semesters focused on English studies. Courses are held on campus, though some are offered in hybrid format. There is also an opportunity to take the second-semester course in Brighton at the University of Sussex in the UK. You will also have the option to do an internship at a workplace of your choice—an excellent way to gain valuable experience and build your professional network!

About
This programme offers a well-balanced mix of liberal arts courses and career-oriented studies, creating a unique combination that prepares you for a dynamic job market.
Semesters 1, 2, and 6 consist of core courses in English at introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels. These courses explore literature and linguistics, often in combination with cultural studies. You’ll complete the programme with a final thesis in one of these areas.
Semesters 3 and 5 feature specialised courses tailored to the programme, with a clear focus on professional applications. You’ll have the opportunity to do an internship at a workplace of your choice—ideal for gaining hands-on experience and building your network. These courses explore how English adapts to various cultural and professional contexts, both locally and globally, enhancing your intercultural communication skills. By combining linguistic theory with digital tools and AI, you’ll develop strong analytical and communicative abilities for writing, language consulting, and more.

You’ll also have the flexibility to shape your studies according to your interests—for example, by choosing your internship placement or thesis topic. Want an international touch? In addition to the opportunity to study your second semester in Brighton, you can apply for an exchange term abroad during semester 4.
Throughout the programme, you will build a broad and rich skill set—from clear and persuasive communication to creative problem-solving and ethical global engagement. By exploring literary themes, you’ll gain tools to understand and express complex environmental and social issues, while also becoming adept at navigating today’s digital landscape.

Selection
Selection is based upon:
- your average grade from upper-secondary school (allocated to 66% of seats)
- the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test (SweSAT) (allocated to 34% of seats)
Please note that the SweSAT is a test only available in Swedish and is in no way mandatory for admission.

After graduation
With deep and broad knowledge of English, you will find a wide range of career opportunities — both in Sweden and internationally. English plays a central role in global official communication, as well as in popular culture and media. During your studies, you’ll gain skills applicable in many fields, such as language consultancy in business and public administration, tourism, marketing, communication, translation, and the cultural and education sectors. Study and career guidance is available throughout the programme.
Degree
The programme leads to a Bachelor of Arts (Filosofie kandidatexamen) with a major in English.
Facilities
As a student in the programme, you’ll study at the Department of Languages and Literatures within the Faculty of Humanities. Studying in a programme promotes a strong learning environment and often fosters close bonds among students. The campus is located by Näckrosdammen in central Gothenburg, just steps away from the Korsvägen transport hub. The new Humanities building offers spacious, light-filled areas for both study and social activities.
Study abroad
As part of the programme, you can choose to study your second semester in Brighton, thanks to a partnership with the University of Sussex. In Brighton, you’ll use the language in authentic settings and thus gain deeper cultural insights and engagement. Students who’ve studied in Brighton often highlight the personal growth and lifelong memories they gained.
You can also apply for an additional exchange semester abroad during the 4th semester.
