Joel Canderhed is new finance officer

Joel Canderhed is new finance officer, and will work with externally funded projects. His childhood idols include Jacques Cousteau, Alexander von Humboldt, and Sir Ernest Shackleton. Therefore, he thinks it’s super great to work at the Department of Marine Sciences.

What are you going to work with here?

I’m a finance officer, and will work with externally funded projects. The researchers I am responsible for are mainly here in Gothenburg, and on Tjärnö. I assist with calculations for applications, budgeting, follow-up and reporting and so on. In addition, of course, there is also ordinary accounting work such as invoice management and annual accounts.

What did you do before?

After studying accounting at the School of Business, Economics and Law, I have worked at a medical technology company that manufactures IVF products, both as financial assistant and as interim operations controller. I have also worked at their Customer Services for a couple of summers while I was on leave from the accounting unit to study a master's programme in economics.

What do you do when you are not working?

When I'm not at work, I play with my 1.5-year-old at home. When I have the time, and not hanging out with my wife and children, I often take the opportunity to dig into books or Wikipedia, preferably about history or biology, or play nerdy board games. From time to time, I also brew beer, which is a very nice hobby because you get to combine creativity and chemistry, and: the result is usually quite good.

Anything else you would like to share?

My childhood idols include Jacques Cousteau, Alexander von Humboldt, and Sir Ernest Shackleton, so the interest in the sea, biology and polar environments have been with me for a long time. Therefore, I think it’s super great to work at the Department of Marine Sciences, to work with researchers and get an insight into their world.
