Latin - research
Research in Latin at the University of Gothenburg is characterized by a broad chronological and thematic scope, ranging from Pre-Classical to Late Antique Latin. Furthermore, both Medieval and Neo-Latin are represented, with research encompassing fields such as epigraphy, textual scholarship, textual criticism, linguistics, reception studies, the history of the discipline, translation, the history of science, and general editorial philology.
Research Areas
Currently, research is conducted in epigraphy and medieval manuscript culture, the pastoral tradition, and medieval and early modern travel literature, as well as on the relationship between Latin and vernacular languages in Sweden during the Middle Ages and the early modern period. Furthermore, research is carried out on Late Antique poetry and early modern translations of ancient literature; prosody and metrics; the history of science and ancient scientific literature (mathematics); and the linguistic description of Classical Latin and the history of Neo-Latin grammar.
Collaborations
The subject participates in interdisciplinary collaborations such as FokusRom and the Medieval Committee (Medeltidskommittén), as well as in the department’s research areas and their associated seminar activities. Latin collaborates closely with the other ancient languages at the department: Greek and Old Church Slavonic.
The subject seminar in Classical Languages brings together researchers, doctoral students, and advanced-level students from both Latin and Greek.
