Travel

Here you will find practical information on how to travel to Gothenburg and get around the city, including airport transfers, public transport and directions to the conference venue.

Gothenburg, written in Swedish and other Nordic languages as Göteborg, is served by a small-to-mid sized airport, named Gothenburg Landvetter, which is fairly well connected to European and some further afield destinations. A list of airports flying to Gothenburg Landvetter can be seen here: https://www.swedavia.com/landvetter/destinations/.

Gothenburg Landvetter is approximately 20 km from Gothenburg city centre. While there are many taxis that can be booked to take you to the city, the airport has a well functioning bus service (Flygbuss) that runs from right outside the terminal building to several stops in the city centre. The final stop on this service is the central train station in the city. The service runs typically every 15-20 minutes and continues to run whenever flights are going to and from the airport (i.e. most hours of the day). The cost is about 10 euros for a single. Some more information is here, including booking tickets: https://www.flygbussarna.se/en/gothenburg-city.

Tickets can however also be bought from a machine close to the bus-stand (the airport is small; you will easily find it).

Once in the city, travel is fairly easy by the bus and tram, which serves almost all of the city and its outskirts, runs frequently and is reasonably modest in price. You find plenty of information on Västtrafik's website: https://www.vasttrafik.se/en/Tickets/day-tickets/.

Much of the city is also easy to walk, particularly when the weather is good, which it should be during July. The long, light evenings make it even easier to travel by foot. While one should always be vigilant, Gothenburg is a very safe and friendly city.

The conference venue (Pedagogen) is next to the tram and bus stop Grönsakstorget, which is also a ten minutes’ walk from the central train and bus station. The central train and bus station are two minutes’ walk from a travel hub called Brunnsparken, from where one can get a bus or tram to almost anywhere else in the city.

Alternative ways of getting to Gothenburg are to fly to either Copenhagen Kastrup Airport (huge! https://www.cph.dk/en) or Stockholm Arlanda  Airport  (mid-sized; https://www.swedavia.com/arlanda/). From each of these airports, Gothenburg is about three hours by train - for example with Øresundståg (for Copenhagen) and SJ (for Stockholm). Airport transfers at London Heathrow, Amsterdam Schiphol or Copenhagen might be relevant for some itineraries.

From some destinations, it could be possible to travel by train. See here for more advice: https://www.interrail.eu/en/plan-your-trip/trip-ideas/northern-europe.
