34th European Systemic Functional Linguistics Conference (ESFLC34): Ecosocial Environment

The University of Gothenburg is delighted to host the 34th European Systemic Functional Linguistics Conference (ESFLC34) in July 2026 – only the second time in Sweden in the conference’s history.

ESFLC is a long-standing academic conference dedicated to research in the paradigm of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). It also seeks dialogue with scholars working in agnate traditions of linguistics and communication research.

For ESFLC34, we have planned a unique programme, including a virtual plenary and discussion relating to conference sustainability, a workshop on writing system networks and a shared panel on Positive Discourse Analysis run by world-leading scholars in the field.

Update regarding conference registration fee

We can confirm that the maximum conference registration fee rates will be as follows:

Early-bird full fee: 200 euros
Early-bird student fee and retired academics: 150 euros
Standard full fee: 250 euros
Standard student fee and retired academics: 200 euros

We hope to be able to reduce these conference fee with support of other funds. However, we can't guarantee this and this point, and we won't be able to confirm until later. We therefore ask that you anticipate the above fees for planning purposes until any further update.

Confirmed plenary speakers

Professor John Bateman (University of Bremen)
Professor Annabelle Lukin (Macquarie University) - virtually
Professor Charlotte Taylor (University of Sussex)

Workshop on “How to do system networks” by Jim Martin and John Bateman
A panel on Positive Discourse Analysis including Tom Bartlett and Jim Martin

The conference offers scholars and researchers a platform to present their work to their peers. As always, we envisage work exploring applications of SFL in fields such as media, politics, multimodality, education, literary studies, translation, and beyond.

We looking forward to receiving your proposals – see our Call for papers.
