You can design your own bachelor’s degree by combining freestanding courses. It’s a flexible way to earn a degree, allowing you to build on your interests and the career you’re aiming for.

Base your studies on your own interests

You can build your degree by combining freestanding courses of your own choosing. Taking individual courses is a flexible way to study, with a wide range of subjects to choose from. You can study full-time, part-time, in the evenings or online. By designing your own degree, you can tailor it to your interests and the career you are aiming for.

Bachelor´s degree

To obtain a bachelor’s degree through freestanding courses, you need to complete a total of 180 credits, which corresponds to three years of full-time study. Depending on which language you choose as the main subject of your degree, you will need 90, 120, or 150 credits in that language. Within the main subject of study, a bachelor's thesis worth 15 credits must be included.

The remaining courses, in addition to your main field, can be chosen freely from the range of courses offered at the University of Gothenburg. There is also the possibility to include courses taken at other higher education institutions, either in Sweden or abroad.

The next step: a master’s degree

If you found your studies rewarding, consider advancing your expertise in languages and literatures with us. The next step is the master’s level (second-cycle). Here too, it is possible to take freestanding courses towards a degree. A master’s degree comprises either 60 or 120 credits.
