More about Child Culture Design

Child Culture Design at HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design started in 2009 and is a field that is growing in knowledge, yet still unique in the world with its multidisciplinary approach and its focus on an artistic design practice targeting children.

Child Culture Design explores the relationship between design and children’s perspectives. The activity of play is therefore central. As a student of the program you will develop projects for and with children, and practice using multidisciplinary research and knowledge in your design projects. One of the cornerstones of the program is working to create a sustainable society, not only in an ecological sense, but with regards to social equality, gender equality, ethics, economy, and social justice.

FAQ about the programme

Do you have to have worked with childrens culture to apply?
No, of course it is good that you can show us projects that are targeting children, but we are looking for design experience, skills and dedication.

My bachelor's degree is not in design, can I still apply?
Yes, even though it is a design education we frequently admit students from other disciplines such as: fine art, architecture, crafts, illustration etc.

Is the studies on campus or online?
It is a campus education, but some things can be done online.

What can I work with after the education finishes?
You can work with everything that you could work with from another design education, but in addition to that you can work with a child culture design specialization. Depending on your interest that ranges from consultancy for municipalities or cultural institutions (like museums) to being employed in a design studio or production company (like lego). Many students create their own business after their studies.

How are the courses structured?
Differently, there is a mix between shorter and longer projects, and also between individual work and group work. Mostly individual work though. You are in many courses expected to create your own project within the framework we provide.

Does the program cooperate with external partners?
Yes, we believe it is very important to understand how organizations and companies work with a child perspective and aid the students in networking. Not all courses have an external partner though, as we sometimes use other grounds for our projects.

What does it mean that you are a multi-disciplinary program?
It is multi-disciplinary when it comes to design. We see projects and work from all the traditional design disciplines such as: product design, interior architecture and  graphic design but also related disciplines such as illustration, landscape architecture, fine art, interaction design etc.
