Claes Gustafsson has been awarded a distinguished professorship from the Swedish Research Council
Claes Gustafsson, Professor of Medical Chemistry at the University of Gothenburg, has been awarded a distinguished professorship from the Swedish Research Council – a prestigious initiative that provides 30 million SEK in research funding over the next eight years.
Claes is one of the leading researchers in the group that earlier this year published results on a new molecule capable of restoring the function of defective mitochondria. This is an important step towards developing potential treatments for rare and severe mitochondrial diseases, for which treatment options are currently very limited. Claes is also a scientific co-founder of a pharmaceutical company that has initiated clinical trials in the United States – a major and promising advance built on several decades of fundamental research.
