Research data

Data builds knowledge. Within the Skagerak Facility, high-quality data are collected during every expedition with the research vessel R/V Skagerak, using advanced sensors and scientific instruments. These data are essential for understanding ocean dynamics, and we actively work to make them as open, traceable and usable as possible.

Open data publication

Skagerak Facility has begun publishing data from its research expeditions. At present, this includes CTD data(conductivity, temperature and depth), which are now made openly available via Zenodo within the framework of the national research infrastructure Swerve (Swedish Research Vessel Infrastructure for Marine Research).

As a next step, Skagerak Facility plans to publish data on a continuous basis from the vessel’s ferrybox system and meteorological station, further expanding access to routinely collected observations.

All published datasets are available through the Swerve community on Zenodo:

Publishing data through Zenodo ensures that each dataset is assigned a persistent identifier (DOI), enabling proper citation, reuse and long-term accessibility in scientific research.

Developing data management

A comprehensive data management strategy for Skagerak Facility is currently under development. Our long-term goal is to make all relevant and quality-controlled data freely available through a scientific data server (ERDDAP), allowing researchers and other users to easily search, visualise and download datasets.

In the longer term, Skagerak Facility also plans to deliver data to Sweden’s national oceanographic data centre at SMHI, enabling further dissemination through international data networks. In this way, we contribute to a more coordinated, accessible and sustainable marine knowledge base – in Sweden and globally.
