Eligibility for doctoral studies

According to the Higher Education Ordinance, the requirement for admission to doctoral studies is that the applicant is considered to have the ability required to benefit from the course or study programme and meets the general and specific entry requirements that the higher education institution may have laid down.

General entry requirements

A person meets the general entry requirements for doctoral (third-cycle) courses and programmes if they:

  • have been awarded a second-cycle qualification,
  • have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or
  • have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

You must also be considered to have such abilities otherwise needed to benefit from the doctoral studies.

Specific entry requirements

The specific entry requirement for admission to doctoral education at the Sahlgrenska Academy is that the applicant meets the requirements for an approved English 6/English B/English level 2 course or equivalent. Qualifications proven eligibility, such as upper secondary school transcripts, must be enclosed with the application.

If an applicant does not hold the Swedish upper secondary qualification in English 6/English B/English Level 2, there are several ways in which it may be assessed that the applicant’s knowledge is equivalent to this requirement, including by means of an approved English language test. Further information is available here: English language requirements.

Please note that the Sahlgrenska Academy, in accordance with a decision of the Sahlgrenska Academy Council for Doctoral Education (FUR), does not grant exemptions from the English language requirement. Nor does the Sahlgrenska Academy, beyond what is provided for in the guidelines issued by the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) (see the link above: English language requirements), undertake any additional assessments of equivalent prior knowledge in English.
