About Roger Olofsson Bagge

Gothenburg University's film about Roger's research in connection with his installation as a professor at the department of clinical sciences (1:30)

Roger Olofsson Bagge is Professor of Cancer Surgery at the University of Gothenburg and Senior Consultant Surgeon at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. He is based at the Institute of Clinical Sciences and leads an internationally recognised translational research group focusing on melanoma and breast cancer. His research encompasses advanced surgical oncology, regional cancer therapies, immunology, extracellular vesicles, clinical registry studies, and precision medicine.

He has played a leading role in the development of highly specialised cancer care in Sweden and has been instrumental in establishing national programmes for regional perfusion techniques, including isolated limb perfusion (ILP) and isolated/percutaneous hepatic perfusion (IHP/PHP). His research has contributed to the development of novel treatment strategies for patients with advanced melanoma and liver metastases from uveal melanoma.

Roger Olofsson Bagge is principal investigator of several national and international randomised clinical trials, including the SCANDIUM I–III programme and the NivoILP trial. In breast cancer research, he has held leading roles in major multicentre studies such as SENOMAC, SentiNot and PhysSURG-B. His research spans the full translational spectrum, from biomarker discovery and mechanistic studies to international clinical trials.

His scientific output comprises more than 180 peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Oncology, Nature Communications, JAMA Dermatology, British Journal of Surgery, and Annals of Surgical Oncology. His work has had particular impact on regional perfusion therapies, surgery in the era of modern immunotherapy, and individualised treatment strategies for melanoma and breast cancer.

He is affiliated with the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine (WCMTM), serves on the Board of Sahlgrenska Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC), and from 2026 serves as Vice Head of Research at the Institute of Clinical Sciences, University of Gothenburg.

His research is extensively funded by major national and international funding bodies, including the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Cancer Society, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, the Sjöberg Foundation, and the American Association for Cancer Research. This funding supports both clinical trials and advanced translational research aimed at developing novel treatment strategies and biomarkers for melanoma and breast cancer.

The research group conducts patient-centred translational research with the goal of rapidly translating scientific discoveries into improved diagnostics, treatments, and outcomes for patients with cancer.

As a supervisor and mentor, he serves as principal or co-supervisor for numerous PhD students and postdoctoral researchers and has supervised multiple doctoral theses to completion in surgery, oncology, and translational cancer research. He also leads a biobank of patient-derived tumour models and coordinates extensive national and international research collaborations.

Roger Olofsson Bagge is actively involved in several leading international expert and guideline groups, including the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO), the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), and the International Neoadjuvant Melanoma Consortium (INMC). He has also been appointed to the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), where he contributes to the development of the next edition of the international melanoma staging system.

He serves as Associate Editor of Annals of Surgical Oncology, is a member of the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Surgery, and has received several prestigious awards, including the Swedish Surgical Society’s Major Research Award and the AACR Ocular Melanoma Foundation Career Development Award.
