Swedish Language Didactics
This research profile explores didactic issues in Swedish and Swedish as a second language across various levels of the education system, ranging from primary school to higher education.
The profile area Swedish Language Didactics focuses on linguistic didactics and encompasses a broad field. It brings together researchers from a wide range of research traditions, including literacy research, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, psycholinguistics, as well as functional and traditional grammar studies. A central focus of the profile is how subject content grounded in these research traditions can be translated into classroom teaching. Practice-oriented research is therefore a defining feature of the work conducted within the profile. Current research addresses areas such as reading and writing studies, language development instruction, literacy (school, dsciplinary and academic literacy), student and adult learning, grammar didactics, teaching materials research, AI and education, and issues of multilingualism in relation to didactics.
Most of the department’s programmes are closely connected to the profile’s research. This applies in particular to the subject teacher education programmes in Swedish and Swedish as a second language, as well as to other teacher education programmes at the University of Gothenburg in which the department’s staff are involved. Commissioned education, including teacher training programmes, continuing professional development courses for practicing teachers, and independent courses in Swedish and Swedish as a second language, is also closely aligned with the profile’s focus.
The profile area includes a seminar held approximately once a month. The programme features presentations of completed research, working seminars where ongoing research projects can be presented, and discussion seminars dedicated to issues related to subject didactics.
Overall, the research profile aims to bring together researchers with an interest in didactic issues, thereby contributing to the strengthening of subject didactics in Swedish and Swedish as a second language. The collaboration between the two Swedish subjects is a particular strength of the profile and is characterised by several shared research interests.
Seminar
The seminar Svenskämnenas didaktik (Swedish Subjects Didactics) serves as a joint discussion forum for the research profile and is held on Tuesdays from 3:15 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (location varies).
Ongoing projects
Ämneslitteracitet i grundlärarutbildningen
The project aims to deepen knowledge about disciplinary literacy in primary teacher education. More specifically, we examine the teaching of Swedish, English, and mathematics.
Språkstöttande ämnesundervisning inom kommunal vuxenutbildning
The aim is to develop teaching methods that support language development in subject-specific teaching within adult education. To achieve this, conditions are being created for cross-disciplinary collaboration and the development of language-supportive teaching across multiple subjects. The research is conducted in collaboration with an adult education unit.
