The Classical Musician with a Pedagogical Focus
Summary
The Classical Musician with a Pedagogical Focus is designed for those who have at least 90 higher education credits in classical music or symphonic orchestral performance and wish to further develop both their artistic and pedagogical expertise. The course package offers tuition on your main instrument, in-depth studies in chamber music and orchestral performance, as well as tools and opportunities to teach and lead within the municipal school of music and performing arts (kulturskolan).
About
The Classical Musician with a Pedagogical Focus combines main-instrument studies with pedagogical studies and prepares you for professional work as an instrumental teacher and orchestra leader. Teaching is provided by the same teachers as in the Bachelor’s program in Classical Music, the Master’s program in Symphonic Orchestra Performance, and the community arts school education.
The artistic component focuses on musical preparation, practice strategies, and reflective work on your own musicianship. You take part in supervised ensemble and orchestral projects, often together with students from the Master’s program in Symphonic Orchestra Performance. The work gives you experience of different ensemble formats and develops your ability to perform in interaction with others, to take responsibility for your own part within the ensemble, and to work systematically with rehearsal methods and musical communication. The artistic content corresponds to the course Interpretation for Orchestra Instruments, distributed over two semesters.
The pedagogical component has a strong connection to the activities of the kulturskola. You develop your ability to plan and deliver instrumental tuition on orchestral instruments, individually and in groups, as well as to lead ensembles and orchestras. This includes basic conducting and pedagogical leadership. Through supervised work-based training in the kulturskola, you gain experience of the professional role and opportunities to apply your knowledge in practice. Practice-based seminars and didactic reflection, grounded in music education research, give you tools to make informed pedagogical choices and to integrate your artistic practice with the societal mission of the kulturskola.
The course package Classical Musician with a Pedagogical Focus consists of the following courses:
- Interpretation for Orchestra Instruments, instrumental-didactic version (30 credits; Course ID: MVKD96)
- Didactics and Practice in the Community School of the Arts for Orchestra Instruments (30 credits; Course ID: KSDP50)
