About Linda Åkeflo
Linda Åkeflo is a specialist nurse in oncology and holds a PhD in medical science. She conducts research at the Institute of Health and Care Sciences, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, and is affiliated with the Centre for Sexology and Sexuality Studies at Malmö University. Clinically, Linda works at the Pelvic Cancer Rehabilitation Unit at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, focusing on the rehabilitation of women who have undergone radiotherapy for pelvic cancers.
Research
Her research explores vaginal and sexual health and quality of life in women treated with radiotherapy for gynaecological, anal, or rectal cancer. Her doctoral thesis, Radiotherapy-induced late effects among female pelvic cancer survivors – sexual health, wellbeing and impact of nurse-led interventions, investigated how nurse-led interventions can improve sexual health and wellbeing after treatment.
The PRE-RT research project focuses on preventive strategies for radiation-induced vaginal stenosis, as well as on preserving sexual health and quality of life in women following pelvic cancer treatment. Part of the research also examines how previous experiences—such as sexual abuse or violence—may affect women's rehabilitation needs and their need for support. Linda has been awarded a six-year research position from the Swedish Cancer Society (Cancerfonden) for this project.
