About Hanna Hebelka Bolminger

Background

Senior Consultant in Pediatric Radiology at Queen Silvia Children's Hospital, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, and Adjunct Senior Lecturer (20%) at the University of Gothenburg. Board-certified specialist in Radiology since 2009 and in Pediatric Radiology since 2013. Received a PhD in 2014 with the thesis “Discogenic Pain – A Diagnostic Challenge” and appointed Associate Professor  in Medical Imaging and Functional Diagnostics at the University of Gothenburg in 2019.

Since 2016, I have conducted research at approximately 50% alongside my clinical duties, supported by ALF-funded research positions and grants, as well as funding from the Swedish Research Council (VR).

Research Areas

The primary focus of the research is the development and clinical implementation of imaging biomarkers to improve diagnostics in two major areas: pediatric liver disease and low back pain. Advanced MRI, ultrasound, quantitative image analysis, and artificial intelligence are used to develop and validate non-invasive biomarkers for disease characterization, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment decision-making. The work is highly translational, aiming to facilitate the implementation of advanced imaging methods in routine clinical practice.

Research areas

  • Pediatric radiology – liver disease

  • Liver disease (adult & pediatric)

  • Spinal disorders and low back pain

  • Disc degeneration and biomechanics

  • Quantitative MRI and functional imaging

  • Image-based biomarkers

  • AI and advanced image analysis

Selected current projects

  • Imaging biomarkers in pediatric liver disease

Development and clinical validation of multiple imaging biomarkers derived from ultrasound and MRI for the diagnosis, staging, and monitoring of pediatric liver disease, using liver biopsy as the reference standard. Study cohorts include children with congenital liver diseases, liver transplantation, obesity-related liver disease, hepatitis, cystic fibrosis, intestinal failure-associated liver disease, and Fontan-associated liver disease.

  • Imaging Biomarkers in Pediatric Obesity and Metabolic Associated Steatotic Liver Disease

A focused research program aimed at applying quantitative MRI and ultrasound biomarkers for improved assessment of liver disease in children with obesity and MASLD, aiming to support early diagnosis, disease staging, and longitudinal monitoring.

  • Quantitative and fuctional MRI for assessment of spinal degeneration and pain mechanisms

Development and clinical validation of advanced MRI-based biomarkers for improved diagnosis and stratification of patients with low back pain.

  • Precision Imaging and Digital Interventions in Low Back Pain

Integration of imaging biomarkers, AI-based image analysis, and digital exercise interventions to improve diagnosis, patient stratification, and treatment outcomes in low back pain.
