About Angelica Simonsson

I received my Ph.D. in 2017 in the field of educational work with a dissertation on norms and sexuality in language education in middle school. Since 2020, I have been working at the Swedish Secretariat for Gender Research, conducting research and serving as senior analyst on issues related to gender, education, and working life.

My research interests focus on issues of gender, sexuality, education, and working life. I am interested in how conceptions of gender and sexuality are expressed in and through educational systems and working life, as well as the conditions that are shaped. I am also interested in questions regarding how victimisation and power, such as sexual harassment, in education and work are understood based on different logics, and how various solutions are proposed and understood.

In 2022, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher (Örebro University) on the Horizon 2020-funded EU project UniSAFE. The study focused on institutional responses to gender-based vulnerability in academia.

Together with Maja Lundqvist and Kajsa Widegren, I am an editor of the anthology Re-imagining sexual harassment – perspectives from the Nordic region, which brings together researchers and writers offering new perspectives on sexual harassment and violence in the Nordic region.

I previously worked at the Department of Education and Special Education (2009–2020) at the University of Gothenburg and, for a period, served as the department’s equal opportunities representative and as the Faculty of Educational Sciences’ equal opportunities officer. During my time as a doctoral student and lecturer, I taught courses on topics including gender and education, pedagogy, educational systems and globalization, scientific methods, and adult learning. I have also supervised student theses in the subject teacher education program, the elementary teacher education program, the special education program, the preschool teacher education program, and the bachelor’s program in pedagogy.

Collaboration is an integral part of the secretariat’s work, and in recent years I have collaborated with organizations such as Kantar Sifo, the Swedish Equality Ombudsman (DO), the Swedish National Agency for Education, and NIVA.
