Summary

The course provides more advanced theoretical knowledge in Somali linguistics, focusing on particularly interesting areas within phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics.

About

As background, a general linguistic text on each phenomenon is read, after which the situation in Somali is examined through the study of scholarly articles and important reference works about the language. Students independently prepare short comparative overviews of different prevailing approaches to the issues studied. These overviews are presented and discussed in seminars throughout the course.
