Summary

The master’s programme in Finance provides a rigorous and focused education in modern finance, with a strong emphasis on investments and financial markets alongside corporate finance. The programme combines financial theory with quantitative and empirical methods, programming, and financial data analysis. You will develop the analytical and practical skills to address complex financial problems, while gaining experience with modern tools and approaches, including Python, data-driven methods, and AI. The programme prepares you for a broad range of careers in an increasingly data-driven and rapidly evolving financial industry.

About

Financial decisions shape companies, markets, and society. Investors must decide how to allocate capital in an uncertain world, companies need to evaluate investments and choose how to finance their activities, and financial markets play a central role in directing capital and managing risk. At the same time, technological change, growing access to financial data, and new approaches to sustainability are transforming how financial decisions are made.

The MSc in Finance gives you the knowledge and analytical tools to understand and address these challenges. The programme provides a rigorous foundation in modern finance, with a strong emphasis on investments and financial markets alongside corporate finance and financial decision-making. You will learn how investors construct portfolios, how risk and expected return are related, how financial assets are priced, and how investment strategies are evaluated. You will also study how firms create value, finance investments, and make strategic financial decisions.

Professionally oriented and analytically rigorous

The programme combines financial theory with data, quantitative methods, and practical applications. Research-driven teaching introduces you to contemporary financial thinking and trains you to critically evaluate models, methods, and empirical evidence. At the same time, you develop the analytical and computational skills needed to tackle financial problems in practice.Throughout the programme, you will:

  • analyse investments, financial markets, valuation, risk, and corporate financial decisions using modern financial theory;
  • work with real-world financial data using quantitative and empirical methods;
  • develop programming skills and use statistical, machine-learning, and AI tools for financial analysis, while learning to critically assess their outputs; and
  • examine how issues such as sustainability and corporate governance affect investment and financial decisions.

By bringing together finance, data, and analytical methods, the programme prepares you to approach complex financial questions with both theoretical understanding and practical skills. It provides a strong foundation for careers in areas such as asset management, investment and commercial banking, corporate finance, financial consulting, and risk management, as well as other roles in an increasingly data-driven financial industry.

A more focused one-year MSc in Finance

From autumn 2027, our MSc in Finance will be offered as a one-year programme, replacing the previous two-year format. The new structure reflects developments in finance education internationally as well as our ambition to offer an intensive and coherent programme centered on the knowledge and skills most relevant to modern finance. One-year and similarly compact Master’s programmes in Finance are well established in Sweden and across Europe, and this more compact format is common at leading European universities and business schools.The one-year format allows us to sharpen the focus of the programme and create a clear progression across the core areas of modern finance. The result is a rigorous programme that combines financial theory with data, analytical methods, and skills directly relevant to today’s financial industry.At the same time, we are introducing a Finance specialization within our two-year MSc in Economics programme. Students who are particularly interested in preparing for further academic studies in Finance, or who want a broader theoretical foundation and additional coursework in areas such as data science, may wish to consider the MSc in Economics with specialization in Finance. Programme structure and content

The programme consists of two semesters of full-time study. During the first semester and the first half of the second semester, you take six core courses that build a broad and rigorous foundation in modern finance. The programme progresses from quantitative methods, financial markets and corporate finance to programming, empirical analysis, and advanced topics in finance, combining financial theory with data-driven and practical applications.

The final part of the programme is dedicated to an independent degree project, where you apply the knowledge and analytical skills developed throughout the programme to investigate a relevant question in finance.
