Gendering Global Politics
Summary
In this course, we focus on how a range of issues in global politics are related to sex and gender. We explore the complexity and interconnections between these issues, both locally and globally, as well as in everyday life. In the course, we examine how different actors understand global political issues through the lens of sex and gender, including possible solutions to the problems that have been identified.
About
The course highlights key challenges and divisions within feminist and gender studies research and/or activism concerning global political issues. These may include development, conflict, economics, migration, religion, populism, technology, violence, justice and rights, climate and the environment, coloniality, and inequality. The course pays particular attention to who is allowed to be heard and seen, and who is silenced and made invisible, in global politics. We also examine everyday life as both a source of and a site where global politics becomes gendered.
The overall aim of the course is to provide students with tools to analyze and question taken-for-granted assumptions about global politics by making visible the role that gender plays.
Teaching
The teaching in Global Gender Studies takes the form of lectures and seminars. In the seminars you will get the opportunity to deepen your understanding and let your views be confronted with the perspectives of other students. A fundamental part of the courses' design is continuous writing assignments, which give you an opportunity to develop your own thinking and writing. The courses are held in English with both Swedish and international students.
