Summary

Focused Study: Contemporary Art and Health is a basic level course aimed at artistic practitioners, cultural workers and healthcare practitioners who have an interest in understanding and working with the field of contemporary art and health. The Spring 2026 iteration of the course takes Death and Grief as its focus.

About

The aim of Focused Study: Contemporary Art and Health is to explore knowledge on the expanding multidisciplinary field of contemporary art and health. Each iteration of the course is organised around a particular thematic focus, which shapes the course content. Themes are designed to function as sites of critical investigation, providing a framework to consider different theoretical and practical perspectives. Each selected theme is understood as socially and politically relevant to global contemporary life and able to reflect and make space for multiple experiences and understandings of health. Over the course, students work on developing their own project proposal relevant to the theme.

Focused Study: Contemporary Art and Health is taught by Dr. Cathryn Klasto and Jason E. Bowman and includes contributions by invited guests. The course does not require previous knowledge or experience of contemporary art, health or the specific theme of death and grief. Emphasis is placed on a willingness to engage and a curious attitude towards the focus of the course.

Course Sessions

The course is taught in English and entirely at distance via Zoom. The course consists of lectures, seminars, workshops, and group tutorials. The course runs throughout the spring semester 2026 from January to June. Typically there is a one day class meeting (morning and afternoon) bi-weekly. It is expected that students prepare independently between classes.
