Contemporary Sociological Analyses and Horizons
Summary
This course introduces students to the great variety of contemporary forms of sociological analysis. Through the course, students are catapulted on to the research frontier in several fields of sociological research.
About
This course acquaints students with the contemporary face of the discipline and some of its most inspiring new directions. Students are given the opportunity to explore different current research directions in sociology in project form, heightening their appreciation of the types of research questions motivating conventional and applied social research today.The course combines lectures, seminars, group work, and a final workshop. The course is firstly examined through three smaller individual written assignments dealing with three contemporary areas of sociological research. There is also a supervised group assignment where students are tasked with formulating their own proposals for future research. These proposals are presented for examination both in writing and orally.
Prerequisites and selection
Entry requirements
Bachelor degree in social science or other related subjects is required, or at least 60 credits in sociology, including at least 30 credits from first cycle in-debt courses or equivalent. Applicants must prove their knowledge of English: English 6/English B/English level 2 from Swedish Upper Secondary School or the equivalent level of an internationally recognized test, for example TOEFL, IELTS.
Selection
Applicants are listed according to the amount of credits in sociology from the first cycle.
After graduation
This course is a core component of the Master’s Programme in Sociology. The programme prepares students for careers in social research both within and beyond academia. However, it can also be fruitfully read as a free-standing advanced introduction to the contemporary face of the discipline of sociology.
Facilities
Teaching takes place in the premises of the Faculty of Social Sciences in the Haga district in central Gothenburg. Lectures and seminars within "Campus Haga" are held in the buildings Dragonen and Sappören (Sprängkullsgatan) as well as Husaren (Husargatan).

Exchange opportunities
This course is open to visiting Erasmus students studying the social sciences on the advanced level. The Master’s Programme in Sociology encompasses the option of exchange studies.
