Summary

Present-day visual culture, for example film, visual art and the internet, reflects and translates the complex relation between culture, tradition, economics and global flows. With this course we want to help you acquire a better understanding of visual culture as a way to translate such complex networks in East Asia, mainly in China, Japan and South Korea.

About

The focus is mainly on film and audio-visual works (digital culture, documentaries, etc) as a way to better understand the current cultural flow in East Asia and in its relationship to the global situation but also to see visual culture in various ways from a social sustainability perspective.

The aim is to provide you with theoretical tools for approaching visual culture and film from both a regional and transnational perspective. The course offers an introduction to cultural industries, film, and audiovisual works produced in East Asia, primarily in China, Japan, and South Korea. Several films and audiovisual works are discussed in greater depth as key case studies to enhance understanding of the interactions and connections within the East Asian region and between the macro-region and the world. In addition, the course includes a discussion on the circulation of visual culture through festivals, international events, and exhibitions, as well as via digital platforms where different languages and cultural backgrounds meet.
