Artistic Approaches in Craft
Summary
With previous experience in craft, you can use this distance course to deepen your artistic understanding and further develop your own arts and crafts practice.
About
The first part of the course invites you to reflect on your current craft practice and formulate your expectations for your future artistic development. You will also be introduced to constructive feedback as a tool for reflecting on both your own and others’ practices. Through a writing assignment, you will give feedback on another student’s craft practice.
In the second part of the course, you will be introduced to tools and methods for artistic development. Each method is explored through an assignment that encourages experimentation and exploration, followed by oral and written reflection.
A theory workshop focuses on the importance of historical and contemporary references within arts and crafts. You will investigate historical references relevant to your own field of interest and consider how they relate to your practice.
Towards the end of the course, you will bring together the knowledge and perspectives you have developed in an individual project. The project will be presented and discussed with others.
All the information and materials you need to complete the course are available online, and there are no mandatory live sessions, allowing you flexibility in when and where you study. Individual tutoring is provided throughout the course.
An open online forum is also available throughout the course, offering opportunities to exchange experiences, discuss your work and connect with other participants.

Apply in four steps:
- Apply for the course. Deadline 15 October, 2026.
- Submit your motivation letter and portfolio. Deadline 15 October, 2026.
- Deadline to document exempt status (EU/EEA cityzens). Deadline 22 October 2026.
- Submit documentation proving you meet the entry requirements of the course. Deadline 1 December, 2026.
Your application should include:
1. Motivation letter. Submit a short motivation letter describing why you want to take this course. Focus on how your experiences and interests relate to the course’s themes. Your letter should help us understand what you hope to find in the course that is supporting your development of your current craft practice.
2. Portfolio. Provide 5–7 images of your own work. Choose pieces that demonstrate how you work with material, technique, and form within your craft practice.

Your application will be assessed based on the following criteria:
- Ability to work with material, technique, and form within their craft-related practice
- Ability to relate your craft practice and motivations clearly to the course focus.
Prior learning and exemption:
If you don´t meet the formal entry requirements, you may be able to qualify through other knowledge and experience. You can apply to have this knowledge and experience recognised as prior learning.
