About

The course focuses on practical training in archaeological field methodology and is conducted as part of a research project. The course initially consists of an introductory lecture that deals with various scientific aspects of the current research project and the object of investigation. The student then participates in an archaeological excavation.

The course provides practical and theoretical knowledge in the planning, organization and execution of an archaeological survey in relation to a research task.

Prerequisites and selection

Entry requirements

90 credits in the subject of Archaeology or Ancient Culture and Society, including Advanced Course in Archaeology (AE1333) or Ancient Culture and Society (AN1333), or equivalent.

Selection

A short motivation letter (max. approx. 800 words) should be attached to the application, explaining why you want to participate in the course and describing how the course fits into your education. Please describe any previous fieldwork experience (e.g., other excavations, documentation experience, surveys, etc.). Additionally, indicate whether you have a driver's license, if you are accustomed to driving, and whether you would be willing to drive abroad should so happen.
The motivation letter must be received by the department no later than April 24 and should be sent via email to historia@gu.sew  with "Motivation Letter AE2023" and your last name as the subject line.
Before applying, please note that the course is physically demanding, with long days outside at the excavation site.
