1. Religion and cultural heritage

This session invites contributions that discuss religion and cultural heritage. The session will explore the role of religion in the context of cultural heritage today with an emphasis on perspectives on lived religion and everyday religion.

Currently there is a strong focus on religion and cultural heritage within a variety of disciplines. Religion in the context of cultural heritage is part of the discussion of religion in relation to the challenges and changes in contemporary society. However, there is still a need to develop the perspectives of sociology of religion within cultural heritage discussions.

The panel organizers focus specifically on religion and museums in their work, but seek to connect with other perspectives on cultural heritage. Museums are part of the cultural and societal landscape and play a part in shaping the understanding of contemporary society through exhibitions about the past. Museums are also engaged in involving stakeholders, including representatives from religious organizations, in their work. Here the differences between minority and majority religious organizations also come into play, making the management of the cultural heritage of the majority cultural narratives in relation to minority narratives a concern. The session is linked to the Danish research project “Religion – Living Cultural Heritage” (2019-2022) and will also focus on establishing contacts between researchers within the field of religion and museums internationally.

All disciplinary perspectives are welcome.
