About Kristina Vukusic

Associate Professor in Biomedical Laboratory Science and a researcher in regenerative medicine with focuson stem cell biology, cardiac regeneration and Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMP).

A central part of her research concerns the regenerative capacity of the human heart and the role of stem cell niches in tissue repair. In her doctoral research, Stem cells in the adult heart, she identified an anatomical region in the human heart with stem cell niche properties. She has since investigated cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in cardiac regeneration and their possible relevance to heart failure and future regenerative therapies.

She has extensive experience in cell therapy and ATMP development, including autologous chondrocyte implantation, GMP production, quality assurance and regulatory documentation. Her research has also involved stem-cell-based strategies for cartilage repair, including differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and preclinical studies in large-animal models.

Her work combines basic and translational research and includes methods such as cell culture, histology, immunohistochemistry, imaging, molecular biology, proteomics, RNA sequencing and biobanking.

Ongoing collaborations with academic-, clinical- and industrial partners within regenerative medicine and ATMP. She is project leader for Sahlgrenska Academy within SCALE and also teaches in the Biomedical Laboratory Science programme, including advanced-level teaching in ATMP and related laboratory methods (BMA123).
