About Jennie Karlsson

Jennie Karlsson is a doctoral candidate in Child and Youth Studies at the Department of Education, Communication and Learning. Her research interests concern young people's development and learning, democratic approaches in education, and strategies for promoting trustful relationships and tolerance among individuals. Jennie has a background as a university lecturer, where she taught subject teacher students in history, history didactics, and educational science. She has also previously worked as an upper secondary school teacher in Swedish and history.

Her dissertation explores the perspectives and experiences of teachers, other school staff, and students regarding antisemitism in Swedish schools. It also examines experiences of interventions aimed at addressing and counteracting antisemitism. The project seeks to deepen the understanding of antisemitism as a societal issue, and how antisemitism as an everyday phenomenon is constructed and negotiated by school staff and students. The study is grounded in growing concerns about contemporary antisemitism and a lack of knowledge about the phenomenon—both in society at large and within the school context—which has been repeatedly highlighted in political discourse, media, and academic research.

From an educational science perspective, Jennie’s project aims to contribute to the development of pedagogical strategies that promote democratic approaches in general, and that proactively prevent and counteract antisemitism in particular.
