Andrea Spehar is associate professor in political science and director of Centre on Global Migration (CGM) at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Current research

Andrea Spehar's research interests encompass the fields of migration and migrant integration, with a particular focus on their interrelationship with broader policy and administrative contexts. Her work has appeared, among others, in the Journal of European Public Policy, Comparative European Politics, Journal of Women, Politics & Policy, Eastern European Politics & Societies, International Migration, Migration Studies and International Feminist Journal of Politics.

Andrea Spehar currently serves as the principal investigator for the research programme, Refugee Migration and Cities: Social Institutions, Political Governance and Integration in Jordan, Turkey and Sweden (SIPGI) (2019-2026), which is funded by the Swedish Research Council. This project asks how urban municipalities address forced migration, considering how it not only changes the social composition of neighborhoods but also influences norms and behaviors within them. This project provides an infrastructure for collaboration between international scholars with expertise in migration studies, political science, and anthropology in Sweden and the Middle East. Using innovative methods including large N surveys, elite interviews, urban ethnography, and experiments using virtual reality 360-video technology, this project investigates and analyzes the nexus between political and social institutions in shaping processes of integration and fills a critical gap in migration studies. Hosted at the Centre on Global Migration (CGM), School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg (GU), it consolidates collaboration with the Program on Governance and Local Development (GU), the Centre for Middle Eastern Studies at Lund University, and the Migration Research Centre at Koc University, Istanbul. The project is project funded by the Swedish Research Council.

From 2025 Andrea Spehar is a co-researcher in a new research and innovation consortium MAGnituDe: Migration, Affective Geopolitics and European Democracy in Times of Military Conflicts, led by Associate professor Olga Sasunkevich from the Department of Cultural Sciences at GU. The project will investigate the consequences of mass population displacement in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine for European democracy and present evidence-based strategies to combat negative trends such as growing social antagonism and identity fragmentation.The consortium is supported by the grant from the European Commission within the Horizon Europe Framework Programme. The consortium consists of 9 partners including 7 universities and 2 non-for-profit organization from Germany, Finland, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Ukraine. The consortium runs for 4 years, till 2029.

Since January 1, 2023, she is a co-director for the Swedish Research Council’s Graduate School in Migration and Integration. The aim of this graduate school is to provide PhD students with advanced teaching, research training and networking opportunities. It aspires to create a unique intellectual milieu for PhD students who write their dissertations on migration and integration.
