Bo Rothstein innehade 1994 -2021 August Röhss professur i statsvetenskap vilken inrättades genom en donation vid dåvarande Göteborgs högskola 1901. Bland tidigare innehavare märks Rudolf Kjellen (1901-1916), Jörgen Westerståhl (1952-1982) och Bo Särlvik (1982-1993). Sedan juli 2021 innehar Johannes Lindval denna professur. Tillsammans med Sören Holmberg grundande Bo Rothstein år 2004 forskningsprogrammet "The Quality of Government Institute". På dess hemsida (www.qog.pol.gu.se) finns hans senaste "workings papers" och publicerade artiklar för nedladdning.
Bo Rothstein disputerade i statsvetenskap vid Lunds universitet 1986 på avhandingen "Den socialdemokratiska staten" och var 1986-1993 forskare på statsvetenskapliga institutionen vid Uppsala universitet där han bland annat publicerade böckerna "Den korporativa staten" och "Vad bör staten göra". Han har också varit gästforskare vid Australian National University, Cornell University, Edinburgh University, Harvard University, The Russell Sage Foundation, Stanford University, Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study, Universitetet i Bergen, Universitet i Aalborg och University of Washington. År 2016 tillträdde han en professur i statsvetenskap vid University of Oxford vilken han lämnade 2018 för att återvända till Göteborgs universitet. År 2003 tilldelades han Vetenskapsrådets särskilda sex-åriga anslag till "ledande forskare". År 2010 utsågs han av Knut och Alice Wallenbergs stiftelse till "Wallenberg Scholar". År 2013 tilldelades han ett "Advanced Research Grant" för ett femårigt forskningsprojekt från Europeiska forskningsrådet.
Bo Rothsteins forskning berör en många olika områden bland vilka kan nämnas de politiska institutionernas kvalitet, välfärdspolitik, social tillit, korruption, fattigdomsbekämpning, arbetsmarknads-politik och intresseorganisationer.

Priser och utmärkelser
- Prize from the Royal Society for Science in Uppsala for Interdisciplinary Research (2004).
- Prize from the Swedish Association of University Teachers for the Promotion of Academic Freedom (2003).
- Prize for best paper in Comparative Politics presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association (2003, together with Dietlind Stolle).
- The Stein Rokkan Lecture (key-note speech) at the Annual Meeting of the European Consortium for Political Research, Uppsala 2003.
- The Shapiro Lecture (key-note speech) at the Annual Meeting of the UK Political Science Association, Leeds 2004.
- Named second most important Swedish Political Scientist ever by the Swedish Association for Political Science in 2006 (# 1 was Herbert Tingsten 1896-1973, # 3 was Jörgen Westerståhl 1916-2006).
- Awarded by the Knut & Alice Wallenberg Foundation as Wallenberg Scholars in 2009. The foundation asked all Swedish universities to nominate their “leading scholars” (all together, Swedish universities nominated 60 scholars). In May 2009, based on recommendations from an international group of distinguished scholars, the Foundation decided to give out ten awards with me as the only social scientist. The award is Euro1.5 mil. over five years to support my research. In 2016, this award was prolonged for another five years.
- "Advanced Research Grant" from the European Research Council 2013 for five year Project titled"The Performance of Democracies"
- Awarded H.M. The Swedish King's medal (8th size with the ribbon of the Order of the Seraphim) "for significant contributions in the field of political science research"
