Entry requirements
Admission to the course requires a pass in all courses from semesters 1, 2 and 3, corresponding to 90 credits, in the Nursing Programme, 180 credits. The prior knowledge requirement must be met no later than 6 weeks before the end of the previous semester.
Content
Care of patients with complex care needs, focusing on, among other things:
emergency care
anaesthesia and surgical care
paediatric care
intensive care and post-operative care
pre-hospital care
pre-hospital trauma care
psychiatric care
responsibility in the care of patients with complex care needs
ethical dilemmas
Communication and structured care in complex care situations (ABCDE/Crew Resource Management - CRM)
Objectives
Knowledge and understanding
- describe the complexity and ethical dilemmas that arise in different care situations from the perspective of patients, relatives and nurses
- identify, critically review and use evidence as a basis for nursing interventions in complex care situations
- identify and compare complexity in care situations within different specialist areas
- describe and explain common treatment principles in different specialist areas
Skills and abilities
- Apply the nursing process in complex care situations based on a person-centred nursing history and nursing status
- apply emergency care in a team in complex care situations
Judgement and approach
- reflect on and account for the needs of patients and their relatives for knowledge and information in complex nursing situations
- reflect on attitudes, norms and human rights in connection with complex nursing situations
- reflect on experiences from work-based training and the connection between theory and practice

Examination takes the form of:
individual assessment of clinical education (4.5 credits)

Examinations marked with * may be supplemented.
If a student who has been failed twice for the same examination element wishes to change examiner before the next examination session, such a request is to be granted unless there are specific reasons to the contrary (Chapter 6 Section 22 HF).
If a student has received a certificate of disability study support from the University of Gothenburg with a recommendation of adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment, an examiner may decide, if this is consistent with the course’s intended learning outcomes and provided that no unreasonable resources would be needed, to grant the student adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment.
If a course has been discontinued or undergone major changes, the student must be offered at least two examination sessions in addition to ordinary examination sessions. These sessions are to be spread over a period of at least one year but no more than two years after the course has been discontinued/changed. The same applies to placement and internship except that this is restricted to only one further examination session.
If a student has been notified that they fulfil the requirements for being a student at Riksidrottsuniversitetet (RIU student), to combine elite sports activities with studies, the examiner is entitled to decide on adaptation of examinations if this is done in accordance with the Local rules regarding RIU students at the University of Gothenburg.
Grades
The course is graded either Pass (G) or Fail (U).
Course evaluation
Course evaluation is conducted in writing and orally in dialogue with the students. The results of and possible changes to the course will be shared with students who participated in the evaluation and students who are starting the course.
