General Shipping Law and Regulatory Maritime Law
About
The course covers the regulations for a safe operation of the vessel, the registration process, ownership and the right in rem protection. The course also includes the rules relating to safety on board, where the major conventions SOLAS and STCW are covered in depth focusing on both the safety of the ship as well as cargo safety. A part of the course consists of a simulated exercise with the ship simulators at Chalmers Lindholmen.
The course is taught in English and includes the following elements:
Introduction: Law of Contracts, Torts and Property, Nationality, Registration and Ownership, Proprietary Interests in Ships, Maritime Claims and their Enforcement, Collisions and Groundings, Limitation of Liability, Conflict of Laws, Ship Sales and Purchases and Law of Ship Finance
Law of Maritime Safety and Security: Overview of IMO Safety Conventions, Ship Safety, Cargo Safety and Navigational Safety, Occupational Safety and Seaworthiness, Piracy, SUA Convention, ISPS Code.
A few study visits are included in the course, for instance a visit to the harbor of Gothenburg and a ship visit. A COLREG exercise at Chalmers Lindholmen Bridge Simulators is included in the course.
The examination is based on graded student presentations at seminaries, a written exam and a thesis seminary along with an opposition.
Entry requirements
Students following a Swedish law programme leading up to a law degree must have passed courses adding up to 150 higher education credits from the first five semesters of the Law programme.
Visiting foregin students may be admitted to the course, after approval of the Director of Studies.
