Content
The course introduces practical, theoretical, and process-oriented methods in Metal Art, which students will continue to develop throughout the remainder of the programme.
The course consists of problem-based assignments with instruction provided through individual and group tutoring, as well as joint reviews. Through these assignments, students expand their experience of the artistic process, sketching techniques, central concepts, and foundational knowledge of metal, workshop techniques, construction, environmental and sustainability considerations, and the expressive possibilities of metals.
The course highlights sustainability aspects regarding the environmental impact of metals during manufacturing and usage. Students present their previous experiences with creative work in materials to their peers. Based on a discussion about a traditionally significant object in metal design, students create their own version in metal.
At the end of the course, students compile a portfolio that communicates the processes and results of their work during the course. The portfolio is presented during a semester presentation, where students also provide feedback on their peers’ portfolios.
The course offers basic knowledge in the safe use of metalworking machines through license-based training and gives students practical experience in maintaining a metal workshop as part of their preparation for future professional work. The semester concludes with maintenance and cleaning of the workshop and its facilities.
Objectives
On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
Knowledge and Understanding
- account for basic terminology in metalworking
- provide examples of the environmental impact of metals during manufacturing and use
Skills and Abilities
- present an individual metalworking project
- safely operate the most commonly used metalworking machines in the workshop
- practice how a workshop and workplace should be continuously cleaned and organised.
- explore artistic challenges based on tradition, function, and the material possibilities of metals
- document their own process and results in the form of a portfolio
Judgment and Approach
- reflect on various approaches to craft, design, art, and public art
- provide feedback on the processes and results of peers.
Sustainability labelling
Form of teaching
The teaching takes place through lectures, webinars, seminars, practical exercises, workshops, reviews, and guidance provided individually and in groups.
The language of instruction is English.
Examination formats
The learning outcomes are assessed through:
- oral and written presentations
- oral presentation in seminar format
- workshop maintenance occasions
- a portfolio presented at the semester presentation at the end of the course.
Complementation of an examined student performance may be allowed. The possibility of
complementation is assessed on an individual basis and decided by the examiner.
Complementation is carried out through the supplementary assignments determined by the
examiner and within a specified timeframe.
Absence from examination may be compensated for with an alternative form of examination, as determined by the examiner.
If a student who has been failed twice for the same examination element wishes to change examiner before the next examination session, such a request is to be granted unless there are specific reasons to the contrary (Chapter 6 Section 22 HF).
If a student has received a certificate of disability study support from the University of Gothenburg with a recommendation of adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment, an examiner may decide, if this is consistent with the course’s intended learning outcomes and provided that no unreasonable resources would be needed, to grant the student adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment.
If a course has been discontinued or undergone major changes, the student must be offered at least two examination sessions in addition to ordinary examination sessions. These sessions are to be spread over a period of at least one year but no more than two years after the course has been discontinued/changed. The same applies to placement and internship (VFU) except that this is restricted to only one further examination session.
If a student has been notified that they fulfil the requirements for being a student at Riksidrottsuniversitetet (RIU student), to combine elite sports activities with studies, the examiner is entitled to decide on adaptation of examinations if this is done in accordance with the Local rules regarding RIU students at the University of Gothenburg.
Grades
The grading scale comprises: Pass (G) and Fail (U).
Course evaluation
Students are given the opportunity to evaluate the course anonymously at the end of the
course. The results of and possible changes to the course will be shared with students who participated in the evaluation and students who are starting the course.
Other regulations
Costs for the student's individual projects are covered by the student.
Additional costs for travel and study visits may apply.
